Grüezi!

Welcome to Wander We Go. I’m Alex.

I write about life in Zürich, travels throughout Europe, and musings on both.

Ducantal/Walserweg: Graubünden

Ducantal/Walserweg: Graubünden

I mapped out this trail before I realized it was a stage of the Walserweg, a long-distance trek that connects a string of Walser villages in Graubünden. This stage starts in the Walser village of Monstein, with a beautiful ascent through the forests and alpine meadows to the intact alpine settlement of Oberalp. The landscape changes as you gain altitude, and starts becoming more rocky and mountains as you reach the highest point of the hike, Fanezfurgga. At the saddle, there are fantastic view of the Ducan glacier and down into the dramatic Ducan valley with its bizarre, erosive landscape. The descent leads to the idyllic Sertig valley, where a short detour to the impressive three-tiered waterfall is a must.

In late June 2024, there was some lingering snow starting at about 2400m, but it was easy to manage and shouldn’t pose any problems.

Note: We started from the Davos Monstein train station, which is at a lower elevation than the Monstein village. There is a bus you can’t take from the station that shaves off about 200 meters in elevation gain.
